Virginia is home to an incredible range of living creatures. Let's explore the full possibilities of this medium as we sketch and draw with woolly fibers.
Needle felting is a relaxing art practice that allows one to create imagery using wool, barbed needles, and a dash patience.
Participants will learn ways to sketch and draw with wool, inspired by images from Virginia's Flora, Fauna, and fungi. Some drawing experience may be helpful but is not required. This session includes information on wool/felting terminology, the science of how felting works, and a bit of history on sheep and wool in the context of Virginia’s colonial past.
Heidi Rugg is the founder of the award-winning Barefoot Puppet Theatre, a touring company, located in Richmond, VA, that performs for youth and family audiences. She has been a teaching artist for over 15 years, leading master workshops in felting, puppet building and manipulation. Rugg’s work has been supported by grants from The Henson Foundation, Puppeteers of America, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and in 2005, she received an UNIMA-Citation of Excellence, the highest American award for puppetry.
Thanks to a VA250 grant awarded to the RELIC Local History and Genealogy Center, by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, we are able to present a series of classes and workshops with the theme " The Evolution of the Traditional Fiber Arts from the 18th century to the Modern Day Artform." The classes and demonstrations will be held at the Central Library starting in March and ending the first week in June.
